Percentage (answered): 100%

A woman received from two undercover agents a secret note containing the following 3 lines. After decoding the note, she quickly destroyed it. Minutes later, when she recalled what she had read, she realized that there was something more to it.

SOURSHOP – UGLI – TANGERINE – ELDERBERRY – GRAPE
CEDAR – ALDER – SPRUCE – SPOTTED GUM – BANYAN
SARSI – MOUNTAIN DEW – STOUT – LIVITA – TEA – MILO – COFFEE

  1. THE DISPUTE:
One of the key “point of view” greatly disputed about this treasure was that it was lacking one vital clue key. Thus it was deemed unfair to many.

    THE MISSING CLUE KEY:
The clue key purported to be missing was “nothing to indicate that there was a numerical order to finding the appropriate letters hidden in the 3 lines of “similar items”.

    OUR VIEW POINT:
The key was there … just needed a bit more help/(salt?) to help us see it.

    LET ME ASK:
What is the universally accepted interpretation when we see the following clue “First Malaysian ever to ride trains?”

We just take for granted that FIRST means the first letter of a series of words that follows or precede it, right? Everyone can accept that.

    LET ME ASK AGAIN:
So, what would we think the universal interpretation will be if the clue was “Second Malaysian ever to ride tains” be?

We would have gone for avoia (right?) – meaningless here, but do we now see the point I am making here?

    AND FOR THE FINAL TIME:
Let’s go on: “Third Malaysian ever ridden trains”?
Then it could be “LEDA”, right?

Let’s pause for awhile here …

    SO WHY NOT?
    There were 3 lines given.
How would these lines be universally referred to?
Would we not say they were the First Line, Second Line and Third line?

And we would then apply the “universal rules” and get:
    SUTEG (first of )
    ELPPA (second of )
    AOTIEIO (third of )
    (substitute with the respective “list”)

Let’s take another pause here and look at RECALL:

    GOSTAN!
The other clue key “RECALL” was in the story-line.
Everyone accepts it to mean “to reverse”, right? Not left!

    PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:
So, let’s look at the 3 lines again and now read them as follows:

    Reverse First .
    Reverse Second .
    Reverse Third .

    And we have:

    GETUS
    APPLE
    FLAVOUR

Would that not then lead us to what we had intended?
Wouldn’t that mean that we have already given the vital “key” that we thought was missing?

    AGREE? YES? NO?
Think we made our point now? Agree? Do tell us what you think!

  2. ERRATA : sorry, under WHY NOT, the results of “third line” should read as “RUOVALF”… this keyboard is still very faulty!!! Here they are again for easy reading:
    SUTEG (first of )
    ELPPA (second of )
    RUOVALF(third of )
    (substitute with the respective “list”)

  3. DISCOVERY:
I just found out that we cannot use “” in blogging.
the words do not get published:
Under SO WHY NOT? and again under PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER – I actually typed:

” at the end of each sentence. But they did not appear on all the 3 lines. Please imagine them for the time being!

josh/ckloh : have a way to fix that?

  4. see, i can’t even show it in my “complaint” – help!
okay now .. imagine that they was “(line)” at the end of each line!!! %^^( (*& ^%$@ )$ @**** ^%$#?

  5. oops, that’s the wordpress’s blocking for html stuffs. Can’t do much about that at the moment, until perhaps we move on to a paid webhost.

Perhaps you should not use the quotes, brackets too often, they are mostly blocked.

  6. “SOMETHING MORE TO IT” – MORE TO IT!
One team shared with me an interesting approach to unravel the hidden message. At least they knew that there was one.

MUST BE THE TASTE OF THINGS TO COME!
They read “more to it” to mean “more flavours than what have already been listed/given in the clue”.

So the team went “C’mon! What flavours OTHER THAN
    SOURSHOP – UGLI – TANGERINE – ELDERBERRY – GRAPE
    are there?”.

    Interesting!

    EVERYONE BROUGHT IN THE RIGHT FLAVOUR;
For one reason or another – but only one competitive team saw the actual hidden message – they deserved to be the Winners! Our Guest Team also had x-ray vision!

  7. Yes, we get this one right but just luck. We went to a convenient store and find out the many flavours of the Fruit Trees, those that not in the list are pineapple/nenas, mango/mangga and apple/epal. Blackcurrant we assume it is more like a grape, so we don’t take blackcurrant too. Haha.

So, we need to shoot one, Lily took apple, I agree. Bcoz, if the above groups really mean something, then the probabability of getting the shorter answer flavour is higher.

I am sure, if the flavour that you want is mangga, some of the cars will still submit apple, at least my car will.

I think just an opinion to the COC, for future Q&A, if you expect the hunters are going to shoot the flavours, make sure the answers are not the longest or the shortest. Take the medium one. Harder to shoot.

  8. Wait till you hear how WE got our apple flavour!

I was fairly happy that we got as far at the ‘Fruit tree drink’. Then to my horror, we found so many flavours in 7-Eleven.

    In 7-Eleven:
So how lah? Chan, any idea?… maybe any one can do… as long as fruit tree drink.

Aiyah… like that ah?…. OK, never mindlah… we just get the blackcurrent and pineapple ones…. then later we can choose one. We’re running out of time oh!

    Then in the car:
Boss, looks like so many flavour oh…. but I got the blackcurrent and pineapple… what do you think? Can kah?

Oh like that ah?…. if you can find yang aloe vera one, even better.

    Why?

Because Vera is a woman’s name.

Oh… ya, that’s a good idea also. But then blackcurrent also aloe… and then none yang got the word ‘vera’…. OK, never mind, let me see again.

    7-Eleven (2nd visit):
Wah… got apple again…. confirmed not ‘vera’… the nearest is the ‘aloe’….

    in the Car:
Boss, so now we have blackcurrent and apple with ‘aloe’… how lah?…..

    ***Boss ponders for a while…….***

Never mind lah…. just take the apple…. it sounds right…

    Sure?

    Never mindlah… lantaklah!

And so we ended up with that forsaken Apple flavour!!!

  9. Hehehe…I am really enjoying myself reading this little story by ckoh. Hahaha…

  10. ckoh, i am extremely amused~!!

In my car, Catherine & GL Lim suspected the story got to do with something, but the clock was ticking own on us (thus the -2 penalty for us, and skipping the last sector).

We got to Fruit Tree Drink, and asked wat’s the flavour. In the same situation, we picked Apple and “lantaklah”, should be correct…

Luckily the mini mart that we had visited only had Apple. =)

  11. and we went in to the same mart as well. luckily for us as well…
