  1. Forget to add, those who are interested to attempt these questions, please include short explanations to your answers. Only ONE try per question.

    Thanks.

  2. SINCE 2R1I WILL BE AWAY FOR AWHILE. I WiLL TRY TO FILL IN THE CRITIQUE ROLE. FOR THE REST OF US : THESE ARE HINTS (Really?).

    ckloh :
Q1: take more care with what you want us to do.
Q2: avoid telling us what to do. be more subtle.

    pysuyin:
Q3, Q4 : both are simple and straightforward … no confusion there. Many will see through your ideas. Good for Level 1 hunts.

  3. Thanks. So, Q1 is not telling enough/not telling accurately and Q2 is telling too much. Ok, I will be back next week. I will email you for more info.

  4. Thanks, ce5nt,

My Q’s ARE meant to be simple and straightforward – I’m still not up to crafting difficult ones. Just want to hone my crafting skills rather than try to baffle solvers.

    Cheers!

  5. I see there’s still no takers for my Q5, Q6 & Q7 yet? Hmmmm…are you people finding them tough, or haven’t the time for them yet???

Rest assured, my Qs are not tricky at all unlike those of ckoh’s (guess i’m not as creative as he is!). Mine are just very commonly styled treasure hunt Qs with a potpourri of different cryptic clues incorporated for “flavour”. Definitedly not meant for Masters only, so all can have a go at it. With just a teeny bit of thinking and imagination, I would expect you to see the light….I hope!

To make this a little more interesting …hmmm ..I will turn this into a game and a race for the answers – I will award points to the solvers of each question i.e. 10 points for 1st solver, 9 points for 2nd solver, 8 points for 3rd solver and so on. The scores for the 3 Qs will be added up (max 30 points) to determine the ranking of participants. Easy enough? …only 1 try per Q.

I’ll be posting an update of the positions every evening so you people will know where you stand in the game. My main intention here is to move the pace up a bit, not to scare you out of it. Do take up the challenge….get cracking now!

  6. Appreciate this, it certainly make this more fun. Unfortunately, I have to go now, will only have time to attempt your questions after tomorrow hunt, hope by then still have some points left for me.

  7. Update for Day 1:
Nobody has submitted any answers yet, sad to say.

I guess everybody’s busy, huh, with their weekend commitments.

Anyway there’s still 6 more days to countdown!

  8. No answers for the previous questions and treasure?

  9. Just back from dinner ….and boy, what a pleasant surprise I had when I logged on. Finally… 2 people responded with a correct answer but for a different question. Yahoo … two of my questions have been solved!!! We now have renroc taking pole position for Q5 & Dr clue for Q6. Bravo to these masters!

I can now understand how ckoh said he felt when someone broke his question. Relieved and feeling pleased that the question is solvable… that’s how I’m feeling right now!

May I now present the scores (Day 2 update):

    Q5 : renroc (10 pts)
    Q6 : Dr clue (10 pts)
    Q7 :

    Present Ranking:
    1. renroc (10 pts)
    2. Dr clue (10 pts)

Note: Presently renroc is ranked no.1 as he had submitted his answer earlier than Dr clue.
Not to worry, everyone. This is not the final ranking yet. There’s still many more points for the grabs and hence many chances for catching up. So, continue cracking!

    Now I can sleep with a smile…

  10. Q1. A replacement for year of the Lord.

    A replacement for
= FORD becomes AD (Anno Domini – year of the Lord)

Answer:Ford@Pusat Servis Kereta Yap Brother Car Care

Q2. Union vows to end their wrong direction first for this Japanese martial art.

Union vows to end = “I DO”
Normally, in union vows, marriage vows, to end the ceremony the last words uttered is “I DO”.

Their wrong direction = [Answer] wrong direction
    = [KIA] wrong direction
    = AIK

    AIK (first) + IDO
    = AIKIDO
    = this Japanese martial art

Answer:KIA@Pusat Servis Kereta Yap Brother Car Care

Thanks renroc, ce5nt and cmliong for successfully attempted both questions.

  11. Morning folks! We had a minor technical hitch, as Dr clue also submitted his answers for Q5 & Q6 to ckloh, without realising that ckloh is also having a go at the questions.

Not to worry, as this is only a game and with no prizes at stake. Anyway, to still include ckloh in the game, I’ve offered to give him triple the points if he gives the correct answer to Q7, which has remained unsolved by anyone yet. No need to be so strict with the rules-lah huh, since this is all for fun, and the more participation, the better.

I was told at a hunt yesterday that my Qs seemed tough. Believe me, they aren’t. When I reveal the answers, you’ll see what I mean. Well, maybe the pointers aren’t that obvious, but then that’s where the challenge lies, right?

Or maybe there are just too many signboards to tackle? Being the nice person that I am …ahem!, I think I will break the list of signboards into 3 sectors and then indicate which sector the answer is to be found for each of the Q. That way, the options to look will be reduced from 80 to about 26-28 signboards …. that will be a BIG help, don’t you think? I can’t help but imagine all of you nodding your heads now….hehehe. But not so fast, folks… that will have to be tommorrow. It’s only Day 3 ….. must let you all work a bit harder for now… hehe.

Remember to watch out for the scores & ranking update tonight. Meanwhile, have fun with the Qs.

  12. Technical hitch,

Guys, if you click on the email address of 13th Second, it will automically trigger an email to lowcheekwan@mail.com So please do not make the same error as I did, and spoil ckloh’s fun.

  13. DAY 3 UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Scores:

Q5: renroc (10 pts), dr clue (9 pts), cmliong (8 pts)

    Q6: dr clue (10 pts)

    Q7: claire (10 pts)

    Ranking:

    1. dr clue (19 pts)
    2. renroc (10 pts)
    3. claire (10 pts)
    4. cmliong (8 pts)

As you can see, we have submissions from two others today i.e. cmliong & claire who solved Q5 & Q7 respectively; dr clue contributed another correct answer i.e for Q5. Q5 seems to be the easiest as 3 persons have got it right so far. Now, what’s surprising is that, we have a newbie solving Q7 which is deemed the toughest so far; congrats to claire who took pole position for Q7. Now, could she be our L. Hamilton in the race? Just 2 more to go, claire!

So, that makes all my answers solved … what a happy day for me as well!

I’ll be revealing the sectors for each Q tomorrow, so keep a look-out for them. In the meantime, cheers & happy solving!

  14. Sorry folks, just reached home from KL – been away since Saturday morning. Here’s the answers to Q3 & Q4: Holy men confused about origins
    A: Lamsa Resources Sdn. Bhd.

Holy men = lamas confused = lamsa
    about = re
    origins = sources

    Q4: Draws on LRT.
A:Syarikat Pembinaan Trans World Construction Sdn.
    Bhd.

    Construction = anagram indicator
    transworld = draws on lrt

renroc, ce5nt and edwin (in that order) effortlessly gave the correct answers to both. Thanks for making it worth my while crafting the Qs.

13th second, wish I had been around to score some points too.

    cheers!

    cheers

  15. DAY 4 AM UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Scores:

Q5: renroc (10 pts), dr clue (9 pts), cmliong (8 pts), claire (7 pts)

    Q6: dr clue (10 pts)

    Q7: claire (10 pts), ce5nt (9 pts),

    Ranking:

    1. dr clue (19 pts)
    2. claire (17 pts)
    2. renroc (10 pts)
    3. ce5nt (9 pts)
    4. cmliong (8 pts)

Thats the morning update! ce5nt solved Q7 & clair bagged Q5 as well…. congrats!

Wow… looks like the race is really heating up now. We had Clair whizzing in unexpectedly from behind and is now almost neck-to-neck with Dr clue. Only a difference of 2 points ….. will we be seeing an upset? As for the others, there’s still many chances for catching up.

    SECTORING OF Qs

As promised, I’ve sectored the Qs to help narrow down the search for you.

    Q5: Answers found within Signboards No.56 – 80

    Q6: Answers found within signboards No.01 – 27

    Q7: Answers found within signboards No.28 – 55

With this, I hope to receive some responses from the others as well, especially the newbies. Trust me, the Qs aren’t too difficult. C’mon… there are still many more points out there. Have a go at it and have fun as well.

Stay tuned to further updates this evening as more attempts are expected to come in!

    Cheers!

  16. DAY 4 EVENING UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Scores:

Q5: renroc (10 pts), dr clue (9 pts), cmliong (8 pts), claire (7 pts), ckoh (6 pts), ce5nt (5 pts)

    Q6: dr clue (10 pts), claire (9 pts), ce5nt (8 pts)

    Q7: claire (10 pts), ce5nt (9 pts)

    Ranking:
    1. Claire (26 pts)
    2. ce5nt (22 pts)
    3. Dr Clue (19 pts)
    4. renroc (10 pts)
    5. cmliong (8 pts)
    6. ckoh (6 pts)

Whoa…. surprises, surprises! Today we have 2 finishers. Claire is the first person to submit all 3 answers correct, followed closely by ce5nt. An amazing feat from ce5nt who “bulldozed” his way through with all his answers within 24 hours. And of course, a super amazing feat from Claire who defied the odds and propped her current position at the top now.

Well, the race isn’t over yet as we should be on the look-out for Dr Clue and all others. Will Dr Clue arrive in time for that 8 pts to Q7 and retrieve his top position? He’ll have to do that fast before someone else gets to it!

Incidentally, 2 other Masters made an attempt on Q7 but failed to get the correct answer. One of them thought I was trying to be “cheeky/creative” with some words, while another thought I had it pun-intended. See how their minds work? …so many levels up! Unfortunatedly, it was only a very straightforward question (hint for all those still attempting!).

    Till tomorrow, have fun!

  17. STRANGE COINcIDENCE!
All the “contestants” have their nicknames begin with a significant “C” – even Dr. Clue can be considered as a “C” name. renroc – is actually back Corner – another “C”. “C” must stand for “CRAZY”!

  18. No wonder! I have 3 of them in my car….;)

  19. 13th second:
That’s either very good news or very bad news! Less we forget, you are Mrs. C too!

  20. Hehehe…..

  21. DAY 5 EVENING UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Scores:
Q5: renroc (10 pts), dr clue (9 pts), cmliong (8 pts), claire (7 pts), ckoh (6 pts), ce5nt (5 pts)

    Q6: dr clue (10 pts), claire (9 pts), ce5nt (8 pts), renroc (7 pts)

    Q7: claire (10 pts), ce5nt (9 pts)

    Ranking:
    1. Claire (26 pts)
    2. ce5nt (22 pts)
    3. Dr Clue (19 pts)
    4. renroc (17 pts)
    5. cmliong (8 pts)
    6. ckoh (6 pts)

Today we have renroc submitting his correct answer to Q6, congrats to him!

Apart from that, nothing very much happened, and rankings remain unchanged.

All of a sudden, the pace seems to have dropped again. Anyway, 2 more days to go before we confirm the final scores.

  22. DAY 6 EVENING UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Scores:
Q5: renroc (10 pts), dr clue (9 pts), cmliong (8 pts), claire (7 pts), ckoh (6 pts), ce5nt (5 pts), Julie (4 pts)

    Q6: dr clue (10 pts), claire (9 pts), ce5nt (8 pts), renroc (7 pts)

    Q7: claire (10 pts), ce5nt (9 pts), dr clue (8 pts)

    Ranking:
    1. dr clue (27 pts)
    2. claire (26 pts)
    3. ce5nt (22 pts)
    4. renroc (17 pts)
    5. cmliong (8 pts)
    6. ckoh (6 pts)
    7. Julie (4 pts)

Ahhh…. it’s the penultimate day! But it’s a day of reckoning as we already have the podium winners even before the race comes to an end! Dr Clue arrived and just in time too, to garner the crucial 8 points to regain his top position… and YES!, he’s now officially declared “THE CHAMP” of RR Virtual Hunt Q5,Q6,Q7!!! 2nd place goes to Claire (sooooo close!!! … but your effort has been remarkable!) and 3rd place to ce5nt (late starter, but surely a winner!).

Julie contributed an answer to Q5 as well, hence making the tally of 7 successful solvers for the question. Great job, and keep going, Julie! Oh, by the way, do you happen to have a “C” in your initials too? Hehehe…..

The excitement may be over, but the race isn’t over just yet. We have only 4 finishers i.e. those who have attempted all the questions, so far. Still one more day to go, so don’t give up. “Tembak” if you may, but hope to see everybody at the finish line!

  23. Pop open the champagne bottle Dr Clue! And give me a glass too. 😉 Congrats to Dr Clue (my hero) and to all others!

  24. Congratulations to the podium finishers 🙂
Still figuring out Q6 and Q7
Don’t have a “C” in my initials but am Mrs. C too.

  25. Welcome to the board ju, and congrats!

  26. DAY 7 – FINAL UPDATE (Q5, Q6 & Q7)

    Ranking:

    1. dr clue (27 pts)
    2. claire (26 pts)
    3. ce5nt (22 pts)
    4. renroc (17 pts)
    5. cmliong (8 pts)
    6. ckoh (6 pts)
    7. Julie (4 pts)

Well, that’s it! No further changes to scores & ranking as the race draws slowly to an end.

Will withhold revelation of the answers/explanations till tomorrow in case there’s still last minute submissions and “tembaking”.

    Till tomorrow, cheers!

  27. THE ANSWERS – Q5, Q6 & Q7

Q5. A follower of original myth and its inversion.

Answer: BMW @Pusat Servis Kereta Yap Brother Car Care

This is a charade which can be broken down like this:
(A follower) of (initial myth) and (its inversion).
    A follower = B (because B follows A in the alphabet series)
    Original myth = M
    Its inversion i.e. inversion of M = W

Q6. Apply and partially rub in for uppermost exfoliation.

Answer: DFF @Distinctive Fine Furniture Sdn. Bhd.

We have here a combination of “Insertion” + “Definition” clues.

Apply (and partially rub) in => Apply (AND + RU) in => Insertion of (AND + RU)
Uppermost exfoliation refers to exfoliation from the top/head = DANDRUFF
    i.e. D (AND + RU) FF => DANDRUFF

Q7. Building and apartment without engineer’s certificate of fitness?

Answer: Fast Print Name Card @Pusat Fotostat

This involves “Deletion” and “Anagram” clues.
Without (engineer’s) (certificate of fitness) = Deletion of (IRS) (CF)
i.e. FAST PRINT NAME CARD – IRS CF = AND APARTMENT (using BUILDING as anagram clue)

Well that’s it, the game has finally come to an end. Congrats to the podium finishers! Now, may I hand over the champagne to Dr Clue… clap, clap, clap! 🙂

Of course, we must note that this is just a game created for having some fun and for filling up the no-hunts period. The performances of some players aren’t really representative of their true abilities due to the imperfect conditions of the playing field. Most of them had time restrictions, work and hunt commitments (bear in mind many of them are also CoCs charting hunts for the weekend/weekends apart from a full-day job!); while some had internet accessibility problems when off work.

In spite of all that, thanks for having taken part and I sincerely hope that you all have enjoyed solving the clues one way or another. When you have solved it, it’s the feeling of satisfaction that gives you the oomph to go crazy for more, doesn’t it? Talking about that, I just can’t wait to go on my next hunt now. RMCC, here I come!

    Cheers & Happy Riddling!

  28. WARNING ON Q8 (Just posted today)!
Something new and can only be done in virtual hunts like this. Not in real hunts (at least I think so!)

  29. the 13th second:
Cool questions! Well crafted with excellent choice of words that stay within the context. Many, even if they did not officially submit answers to you, should have enjoyed them. Applause!

  30. ce5nt,

    Thanks for the endorsement, Master!

(me beaming with a big smile!)

  31. I second ce5nt’s compliments to the 13th Second. Well crafted indeed!

Knew Q7 was an anagram (claire, the anagram addict, solved this one first!), but too dumb to figure out how. It’s more commonly known as Occupation Certificate (OC) here, as opposed to Certificate of Fitness (CF) there. But should’ve known it anyway!

Am tired of kicking myself in the butt! White flag raised!

  32. hi ckoh,

Can’t help not saying that you’ve been one of my favourite critiques right from the start. To me, your style resembles that of Simon Cowell’s …. don’t get me wrong, that’s meant to be a compliment! You may be harsh and merciless in your comments, but most of the times, there’s a lot of truths and constructive criticisms in them too.

So, getting a “Simon Cowell” ‘s endorsement here is a great joy for me! 🙂

  33. Certainly agree that the questions were excellent.

Was soundly ‘beaten’ by the anagram even though I suspected it was an anagram !

Thought Q6 was almost certainly ‘crossword-type’ but yet took ages to solve it as I couldn’t think of ‘dandruff’. (Haircut/sunburn led me nowhere)

  34. TEMBAK Q8 AS MANY TIMES AS YOU LIKE BUT…
you must include a full explanation for your tembak.
Then only “worth my time” to read and reply lah!
If just “tembak saja” – do not expect any response from me.

  35. the 13th Second, enjoy the endorsement, ‘coz I’ve been told that I am very stingy when it comes to giving compliments! By the way, what are you doing still hanging around here? Aren’t you supposed to be out of the country by now!?

renroc, yup, that forsaken DANDRUFF! I have no defence, really. It is a very common word, yet I just couldn’t think of it. Brain dead!

  36. Thanks, renroc!

Another great master who has made my day!

….already feeling the stitch in my face after that long long smile ….hehehe!

  37. ckoh,

Yeah, I’ve to blame it on my work so that I can have an excuse to go hunting for RMCC.

Shhh.. don’t go tell KK, ok! 😉

  38. the13th Second, if it is not too much to ask for, can you just share some excitement of RMCC in the hunt discussion column. I wanted to go, but have to blame it on my work too.

  39. ahhh… this, I think I should pass on the pleasure to ce5nt. He is normally the one who logs his treasure hunt experiences and shares them with his team-mates. He never fails to amuse me with his wits & puns!

    Ce5nt, pleaseeee…

  40. check the “Hunt Discussion” thread!

  41. Q9 SOLVED AHEAD OF Q8!
An easy one … by any standard – instantly solved by the 13th second and the RR Test Drive Team!

Hoping to stir some interest with Q9 from those watching on the side! Do try it!

  42. Sorry about that, ce5nt. As I said, I’ve lessened my visits here this lately. When I saw your Q8 & Q9, I thought I was already too late. Under those questions it says: RIDDLES OPEN from 10 Aug (Fri) to 17 Aug (Fri). I was waiting for the solutions, but they never come! Only now I realised that RR made a mistake on those dates!

Not giving excuses though, I am still lost on your Q8. Trying to imagine my four neighbours getting laid up north; and it doesn’t help that my neighbours are not very sexy people!

  43. DETAD?
yeah, ckloh – better correct the dates for Q8 and Q9,otherwise time machine will be needed!

  44. q8 solved!
And no prizes for guessing by who!
She is certainly the best customer for RR riddles!

  45. ckoh:
Q9 is perfectly answered! Don’t get too caught up with trying to spot your neighbours having cryptic sex.

  46. Hahahaha…. I needed that laugh! Tnx, ckoh & ce5nt.

  47. hmmm…cyptic sex? wonder if a couple were discussing it will go …

    Husband: “12bu@o?”
    Wife : “-!-2PM!A!”

  48. and probably China and India could do with lots of cryptic sex. Takes forever to decipher – so prolongs progeneration.

  49. no wonder somebody in China already want to name their baby “@” – must be inspired by some form of cryptic sex.

  50. Yes, that would be a possible scenario, ce5nt. But what would happen if only one of the couple is cryptic-minded?…

    Husband: “Come INTO bed…”

    Wife: “Ummm… beCOMEd?…”

Husband: “We’re having WILD sex tonight!”

    Wife: “Ummm… EXit thongS?…”

Pathetic life for that guy, huh?

  51. But how does one write “@” in Chinese character?

  52. N@G?

  53. CNGRTLTNS T EDWIN ND JULIE!
Thy hv bth jnd th “crckd Q9” grp! Wll dn!
Hpe y fnd thm ntrstng engh!

  54. Hello everybody!

We will end the August 2007 – Virtual Hunt, with 2 questions from ce5nt and 6 questions from myself.

Please don’t craft any more questions for the 80 signboards, on the next 1 or 2 days, a new list of 80 signboards will be out. And please enjoy and craft from the new list. I certainly enjoy doing it, and learn alot from this. Hope you all enjoy it too, crafting or solving.

  55. So, in conjunction with the Merdeka Celebration, base on the 6 questions that I crafted, I decide to imitate the13th Second, to organise a competition.

This competition called RR’s Merdeka Riddles. The competition divided to 2 categories.

    1) Category B (B for Beginner perhaps)
    2) Category A (A for Advanced-level maybe)

This is how it works. Q12 to Q14 is Category B questions. Q15 to Q17 is Category A questions.

All the contestants can attempt for all the 6 questions of course and send to my mail, but once the contestant manages to break a Category A question, then he/she will be clasified in Category A competition instead of the default Category B. And for Category A contestant all their answers for Category B questions will be welcomed but not counted. Simple enough?

And I must clarify that those that in the Category B doesn’t reflect their true strength, they might not have the time to tackle the questions, for example.

  56. RR’S MERDEKA RIDDLES COMPETITION FORMAT

  57. DR CLUE & JULIE RGHT N TRGT WTH Q10! SYBS!

  58. FAIR GAME, the 13th Second!
Come to think of it, I kind of like your answer for Q11. Try to find mine.

  59. Q8 : Only firsts of leaders of four neighbours get laid going North.

Answer : 4 signs to make up the full answer namely,

“Digital” @ Digital Sight & Sound,
    “Infocus” ,
    “ASK” and
    “Laundry @ laundry station”

    Explanation:

Only firsts = take only the first letters

of leaders = of the first words

of four neighbours = of four signboards that are immediately next to each other.

    get laid = spells “l-a-i-d”

going North = if read from bottom to top

if read from top to bottom – it actually spells “d-i-a-l”

therefore going North – will get you l-a-i-d.

So how many got “laid”? Just a couple!

  68. Q11 Fare split by choice.
    A11 (Alternative) : Orga Jus

I received this answer from a couple of masters and I am intrigued by it.

So I will, in the name of entertainment, agree that it is a very close but not exactly the same.
And in some circumstances I will probably accept it as an excellent alternative answer!

    Explanation:

    Or = choice

    by = is “next to”

fare = a type of food : e.g. gajus (arguable as to whether cashew nut is a fare. I would usually refer a “fare” to be food that is prepared).

    split = separated

    ga Jus (literally separated)

Answer : Or is positioned next to a separated “gajus”. i.e. Orga Jus.

    ce5nt
